SPAM and Anti-Virus service

About the Anti-Virus protection service...

Our mail server virus scanning facility protects your mailbox from unwanted and damaging viruses. Virus scanning is enabled for all accounts by default. Should a virus be detected in an email bound for your inbox, the scanning facility will automatically block the mail and issue a reply to the sender, notifying them of the detection of a virus.
Definitions are checked for and updated automatically ensuring that you are protected against emerging threats. The mail server scans all incoming and outgoing e-mails.

The virus scanner is capable of detecting all known virus types, including polymorphic or self-encrypting viruses; it is even capable of scanning the contents of compressed archives such as .zip and .rar files ensuring that no virus bearing email can make it to your inbox.

About the SPAM protection service...

Spam is any unsolicited email message. Each community member can effectively manage spam by setting appropriate spam filters from their 'USER' control panel. (see the 'control panel section for access details.)

Once logged into the control panel the user can select 'Spam Controls'

The control panel uses the spam filtering tool SpamAssassin™ to identify spam. Each email is evaluated against message rules that associate a content pattern or characteristic with spam. Each rule is assigned a value called a score. When the text in an email matches a rule, a score is assigned to the email. If the sum of all such scores exceeds the set threshold (low, medium, high, or custom), the message is categorised as spam.

Example
Assume that the following message rules and scores are defined and the spam threshold is set to Medium (score of 10).

Rule Description Score
ALL_CAPS Checks for email messages with upper case letters in the subject of the email message. 5
FROM_NUM Checks for email messages where the "From" field in the email message ends with a number 10

If you receive an email message from an address example123@example.com having the subject SAMPLE TEXT, the message score computes to 15. Since it exceeds the set threshold, the email message will be classified as spam.

If you receive an email message from an address example@exa.com having the subject SAMPLE TEXT, the message score computes to 5. Since it does not exceed the set threshold, the email message will not be classified as spam though the subject of the message matches one of the message rules.

Allow List
An 'Allow List' can be quickly and easily set up. An allow list defines email addresses or domain names from which you will always allow mail to be delivered normally, regardless of content. Should
SpamAssassin™ incorrectly reject a legitimate email from a particular address or domain name, you should list it here. To add a domain or email address to your Allow List, enter it into the space provided and click the 'Add' button. The current entries on your Allow List are displayed, to remove any entry simply click it's corresponding 'Remove' link.

Block List
A block list defines email addresses or domain names from which you wish to automatically reject email, regardless of content. Should
SpamAssassin™ fail to intercept a spam email from a particular address or domain name, you may wish to list it here. To add a domain or email address to your Block List, enter it into the space provided and click the 'Add' button. The current entries on your Block List are displayed, to remove any entry simply click it's corresponding 'Remove' link.

Headers
SpamAssassin™ adds to the email subject field a user defined flag e.g.['SPAM'] to every message it scans, which has been identified as spam. You can use this header in conjunction with the filtering/rules facilities in your email program to handle spam messages as you desire or just to highlight SPAM messages.
