File
Structure, the help folder and some useful urls to remember.
An example community site can be found at http://this-could-be-yours.co.uk and we will use their site as an example of the file structure that is found when you ftp into this particular site. We are using the FTP client found in Dreamweaver which is a very good HTML WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor for building and publishing websites.
When you connect to the FTP server, you will placed in the home directory for your account, in the above case '/home/operations'. You will see three top level system folders in this home directory called:
In the above example the website has made use of some of the self-installing power-tools that i-communities provides. These are the two gallery folders and the web calendar folder. As these areas of the site are controlled via on-line interfaces there is no need to do anything with these folders. You can also see a folder called help (which has also been expanded out) - this is where these help pages are stored so once again there is no need to do anything with that folder. There is also a folder called images which is a good place to put all the images that a website (or a section of a website) uses - As a Web page consists of an HTML file, plus any image (picture) files used on the page it helps to keep things tidy as a webpage may use many images. There are six 'html' pages that make up the user built website which are called:
For all websites the default page for any folder is called index.html - hence you can see another 'index.html' in the 'help' folder and also another 'image' folder to hold all of the images that the help section needs. The index.html page is the homepage You can transfer files directly to your site directory folder (mainwebsite_html) or create subdirectories/folders within it to assist with the navigation of your site and ease use by laying out the sites structure in a logical way. If this is a new account, you'll see some default files and folders installed by us within the mainwebsite_html folder these are the files that make up the default home page you see and the help pages that you are now reading. when you are ready to transfer your site to the web you will have to delete/overwrite the exisiting 'index.html' file as this is the default name for your homepage and may wish to empty the images folder and use it to store your pictures and logo's. Please do not delete the help folder or you will lose these help pages. As soon as a file is uploaded to the web server, it is available for all to see.
